Transparent GIF Maker

Make a transparent GIF from an existing GIF, a video clip, or a still image. Pick a background color to key out, or let AI find the subject — then export a transparent GIF that plays anywhere.

How to make a transparent GIF

  1. 1

    Add your source

Drop a GIF or an MP4/WebM clip, paste from the clipboard, or pick a still image. Video is sampled into frames at the frame rate you choose.

  2. 2

    Choose what becomes transparent

Auto-detect the corner color for flat backgrounds, pick a color with the eyedropper, or switch to AI cutout for photos and people.

  3. 3

    Set the frame delay

Keep the original timing or force a fixed delay per frame, so the result plays the way you want.

  4. 4

    Export

Transparent GIF for maximum compatibility, or APNG when you need soft edges.

Which format should you pick?

The 1-bit transparency problem — and how to work around it

GIF has no alpha channel. Each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque, which is why transparent GIFs often show a white or grey fringe where the subject's edge used to blend into the old background.

There are three practical fixes: shrink the edge by a pixel so the anti-aliased rim is cut away, apply a matte color that matches the page the GIF will sit on, or export APNG where real 8-bit alpha exists. This tool exposes all three, and previews the result over light and dark backgrounds before you commit.

Frame consistency: the thing most makers get wrong

If each frame is keyed independently, a pixel near the edge can flip between opaque and transparent from one frame to the next — the subject shimmers. Keeping tolerance, edge shrink and matte identical across the whole stack removes most of it.

For footage with a moving camera, locking the key to the first frame's sampled color is usually better than re-sampling per frame — which is exactly how the auto-detect here works.

Transparent GIF maker FAQ

Can I make a transparent GIF from a video?

Yes — drop an MP4 or WebM and it is sampled into frames at the frame rate you choose before keying.

Why does my GIF have white edges?

GIF's 1-bit transparency. Use edge shrink, a matte color, or export APNG instead.

What frame delay should I use?

100 ms per frame (10 fps) is the usual web default. Most chat apps clamp delays below 20 ms.

Is there a watermark?

No.

Do I need an account?

No.
